LA MIRADA, CALIF. -- After a tough non-conference schedule, the Azusa Pacific men's soccer team was ranked #6 in the NAIA and had an outstanding record of 7-1-1. After two GSAC games, things have turned sour for the Cougars in a hurry.
On a blustery day in La Mirada, the Cougars were upset for the second time in only four days, falling to unranked Biola (8-4-0, 2-0) on Saturday, 3-2 in overtime. Defender Eddie McRae collected a loose ball just outside the Cougars' penalty area as the clock struck the 100 minute mark, dropping the Cougars to 0-2 in conference play and 7-3-1 overall.
In a game that saw Azusa Pacific control the majority of the possession, it was the Cougars that got on the board first. All-American Carlos Ochoa was taken down in the penalty area by goalkeeper Mark Wade and Peter McGovern converted for the second straight game to put the Cougars up 1-0.
However, the lead would last less than two minutes. A foul called on the penalty spot in the Cougars' 18-yard box gave the Eagles an indirect free kick and an excellent scoring chance. Kevin Cloward pushed the ball right to Ben Orr and he rifled home a shot into the upper left corner to equalize for Biola.
The match was relatively uneventful until the 86th minute when McGovern committed a foul just inside the Cougars half of the field. Forward Cedric Ernst found himself all alone 25 yards out and Tommy Higgians fed him the ball for a one-on-one with Cougars' keeper Tim Gorman. Ernst picked out the lower right corner and gave the Eagles their first lead with under four minutes to play.
All-American forward Jason Roufs gave the Cougars new life less than a minute later when Gorman found Roufs streaking past the Eagles defense and tied the game at 2-2, setting up the dramatic overtime finish.
Azusa Pacific continues GSAC play on Tuesday, October 6th when they travel to Irvine and take on Concordia at 3 p.m.
