AZUSA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 6-ranked Azusa Pacific used a stifling defense and an up-tempo offense to post a 95-70 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Cal Baptist in Azusa Tuesday night. The win was Azusa Pacific's seventh straight over the Lancers and its 14th in the past 15 meetings.
Senior
Jeremy DeVries led a quartet of Cougars in double-digit scoring with 14 points, including 12 that came off of 4 treys.
Micah Sullivan added 11 points and a game-high 8 rebounds.
Ty Clark and
Andy Newman chipped 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench. The Cougar bench outscored CBC's reserves, 49-22.
T.J. Walker, the Cougars' leading scorer (15.6 avg.) was held to just 5 points but tallied 9 assists and 3 steals to lead a defense that forced 24 Lancer turnovers.
"Ty came in and played really well," said Cougar coach
Bill Odell. "He picked up the scoring while the offense was stagnant. His quickness changed things. We tried to keep up our pressure defense for a full 40 minutes tonight."
Cal Baptist was paced by Aaron Proffitt's 14 points. George Martin, Martin Woods and Dennis Weaver all had 12 points. All-GSAC guard Rick Hurt, who entered the game averaging 16.3 points, was held to 6 points on 3-for-8 shooting and committed 4 turnovers.
"We knew they had athletes who could score," said DeVries, "but we thought that if we could neutralize their scorers, the other players would have a hard time picking up the slack."
Cal Baptist scored 7 of the game's first 11 points before the Cougars went on a 16-2 run over 6-minute period to assume a 20-9 lead with 9:35 left in the half. Azusa Pacific forced a whopping 16 Cal Baptist turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play, including 5 during the run. Clark scored 10 first-half points in just 12 minutes of play.
"I came in to be a spark and pick up the intensity," said Clark. "After having a 20-point lead at the half, we wanted to make this game the one in which we put 2 halves to together."
With the win Azusa Pacific improves to 19-4 overall, 4-1 in the GSAC, remaining a game behind Westmont. Cal Baptist falls to 9-11 overall, 1-4 in the GSAC.
With tonight's win, Azusa Pacific is now 61-10 in GSAC play since 1993.
