Westmont Upset No. 6 Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Despite 5 Azusa Pacific 3-pointers in the final 1:12 of the game, Westmont hung on to upset the NAIA's No. 6-ranked Cougars, 93-90, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game in Azusa Tuesday night.

The Warriors broke open a tight game midway through the second half with a 13-0 run to take a 74-65 lead with 5 minutes left in the game. The Warriors appeared to have the win locked up when they pushed their cushion to 14 points at 87-73 with 1:19 left in the game. It was at that point the Cougars caught fire as T.J. Walker buried 3 treys along with 1 each by Andy Newman and Jeremy DeVries. DeVries leaning trey pulled the Cougars to within 92-90 with 7 seconds left. When Warrior guard Steve Baik made just 1 of 2 free throws with 4 seconds left, the Cougars had one last chance at another 3-pointer to force OT, but Walker dribbled the ball off his foot at half court and with it went the Cougars' last chance for an amazing comeback.

"Right now, Westmont is a better team than us," said Azusa Pacific coach Bill Odell. "They have 3 players better than any 3 we have, and we have 1 player better than any 1 they have. But tonight, they're 3 showed up."

Westmont hopped on the shoulders of junior forward Brian Gomes, who recorded his first triple-double of the season with game-highs of 29 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. Gomes scored 6 points during the Warriors' 13-0 run.

"Nobody is going through this conference undefeated," added Odell. "Right now, we're not playing well. Our big men aren't shooting well. I'm proud of our guys for not quitting, we just dug ourselves too deep of a hole."

Walker paced the Cougars with 24 points and 7 assists. DeVries added 15 and Newman chipped in 13 points.

Azusa Pacific led 43-41 at the half and then used an 8-0 lead to take a 51-41 lead to start the second half. Westmont, which led 6-0 to start the game, never got the lead again until Ken Knabke put back a Gomes missed free throw to give Westmont a 67-65 lead with 7:59 remaining in the game.

The loss is Azusa Pacific's first GSAC defeat at home since Feb. 13, 1996 (Concordia, 112-96). The Cougars fall out of a 3-way tie for first place in the GSAC and are now 17-4 overall, and 2-1 in conference play. Westmont has now won 4 straight and improves to 12-5 overall and 3-0 in the GSAC.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for Azusa Pacific, which faces the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Biola in La Mirada on Saturday (Jan. 24) at 7:30 p.m.
