Cougars Win GSAC Opener

AZUSA, Calif. -- In a GSAC opener for both schools, Azusa Pacific upset the NAIA's No. 20-ranked Westmont in a five-game thriller, 15–7, 11-15, 15–13, 9-15, 15-12, Saturday night in Azusa.

In the deciding fifth game, the Cougars jumped out to a 7–3 lead, but the Warriors came bouncing back to tie the game at seven apiece, then again at 11-all. Azusa Pacific then scored the final points to clinch the match. It was the first fifth game of the season for the Cougars, and also the first without rally scoring, a rule was dropped this season.

The victory was the first in Azusa for the Cougars vs. Westmont since 1991 and also broke a string of three straight losses to the Warriors.

Senior Kelly Dryden and sophomore Jennifer French had 16 and 12 kills, respectively for the Cougars.  Dryden also had 14 blocks in the victory.

With the victory, Azusa Pacific improves to 5-4 on the year, while Westmont falls to 10–3. The Cougars continue conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at home against Biola.
