Cougars Beat Westmont, Become GSAC's Top Winner

AZUSA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 18-ranked Azusa Pacific became the Golden State Athletic Conference's all-time winningest program with an 83-79 GSAC victory over Westmont, Tuesday night in Azusa.

Azusa Pacific and Westmont entered the game with identical all-time GSAC records in the conference's 11-year history.  The Cougars, who are 54-9 in GSAC play over the past 5 years, caught Westmont last Saturday and passed the Warriors tonight and now stand on top of the all-time GSAC standings and this year's current standings by the same 1-game margin.

Dameon Page paced Azusa Pacific with 14 points, Micah Sullivan added 13, while Trenton Jackson and Ty Clark tossed in 12 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench.

Westmont was led by Chris Lang's game-high 15 points, while Lou Cabllero added 14.

Azusa Pacific led 36-28 at the half, thanks to a 14-7 run over the final 6:52 of the half.  Clark tallied 8 first-half points on 3-for-4 shooting to lead a Cougar team that canned 15-of-28 (.536) shot.  Westmont led 11-6 in the early going before the Cougars came back to knot the score at 14-14.

In the second half, the Cougar opened up a 48-32 lead with 14:26 left in the game, but Westmont never quit, rallying to within 4 points on Ben Hook's 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

The victory gives Azusa Pacific its second straight regular-season series sweep of the Warriors and only the Cougars' fourth in the series' 26-year history.

In terms of the all-time GSAC standings, Azusa Pacific is now 90-47 while Westmont is 89-48.

As for this season, Azusa Pacific improves to 22-7 overall, 8-2 in the GSAC, maintaining its 1-game lead over Biola and Southern California College.  Westmont falls to 12-14 overall, 4-7 in the GSAC.
