Cougars Halt SPU's 28-game Home Winning Streak

SEATTLE, WASH. -- Azusa Pacific, the NAIA's No. 25-ranked team, upset highly-regarded Seattle Pacific, 81-73, in Seattle Saturday night to win the Vitamilk Classic and in the process snap SPU's 28-game home court winning streak.

As was the case in Azusa Pacific's win over Western Washington the night before, Cougar guards T.J. Walker and Jason Boswell led the way, each tallying a game-high 20 points. Boswell scored 16 in the second half and Walker scored 7 in the final 3:30 to keep Seattle Pacific at bay.

"We talked at half time about tiring out their people," said Azusa Pacific coach Bill Odell. "Their guys had to sustain longer efforts tonight than in previous games, and of course T.J. is the great neutralizer. When their defense shut us down, he found ways to create something for us."

Azusa Pacific opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take a 46-36 lead 4 minutes into the half. The Cougars pushed the lead to 50-39, while Seattle Pacific went the first 5:30 of the half without a field goal. The Falcons rallied, though, to pull within 52-48 with 8:05 left in the game. Boswell then spurred a run that he highlighted with a trey from the corner to put the Cougars back up 63-53 with 5:30 left.

Seattle Pacific was hindered by foul trouble as 6-foot-10 center Chuck Carter, who picked up 4 fouls in the first 10 minutes of the second half, then took a permanent seat with 4:02 left in the game.

"I said before the season started that if we could win the first 5 games then we should be ranked in the NAIA's top 5," added Odell. "Obviously, this game and The Master's next week were the key games in the first five. This is a very satisfying win."

Seattle Pacific hadn't lost at its own Brougham Pavilion since Dec. 30, 1995 (81-68 to Missouri-Rolla). Since then, the Falcons put together a 28-game home court win streak. The Falcons struggled with a tenacious Cougar defense which held SPU to just 42% (28-for-67) shooting from its own floor, including a 13-for-34 clip in the second half.

Micah Sullivan added 11 points and 8 rebounds to aid the Cougar cause and Nate Getz chipped in 5 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.

Boswell, who came to Seattle without ever registering a 20-point game in his 60-game Cougar career, leaves the Emerald City with a pair of such efforts, tallying a career-high 23 in Friday's victory over Western Washington to go along with tonight's 20-point showing.

The Cougars are now 3-0 on the young season (140-35 since 1993) while Seattle Pacific falls to 2-1.
