Cougars Take Over GSAC Lead With Win

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific, the NAIA's No. 20-ranked team, jumped all over Concordia in the opening minutes of the game and cruised to a 101-84GSAC victory, Tuesday night in the Cougardome. The victory, combined with Westmont's 91-81 loss at Fresno Pacific, propelled the Cougars into sole possession of first place in the GSAC for the first time this season.

The Cougars quickly moved out to a 12-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Sophomore Raymond Tutt, the GSAC's leading scorer (26.7 avg.), then scored nine consecutive points in 90 seconds to spur another Cougar run that put Azusa Pacific up 31-12 with 11:06 left in the first half. The Cougars cruised in for the victory, it's sixth straight and 11th in the past 12 games.

Tutt finished the game with 26 points, 22 in the first half, leading the Cougars to a 47-26 halftime cushion. He was 9-for-9 from the floor, which included a 5-for-5 clip from the three-point arc. Senior Deric Daniels added 22 points and a career-high 17 assists, the most by a Cougar in 15 years. Junior guard Tim Sebek added 13 points. The Cougars converted in amazing 63% (32-for-52) of its field gold attempts. Concordia was led by Pharoah Jones' 23 points, 21 of which came after intermission.

Azusa Pacific, which improves to 21-7 overall, 10-1 in the GSAC, takes a one-game lead over Westmont, which falls to 18-6 overall, 9-2 in the GSAC. Azusa Pacific and Westmont meet in Azusa next Tuesday (Feb. 21). Concordia falls to 22-7 overall, 6-5 in the GSAC. Azusa Pacific, the two-time defending GSAC champion, is now 33-2 in GSAC play since 1993.
