EAGLE ROCK, Calif. – Azusa Pacific did just enough on the scoreboard to reflect the way they dominated the other parts of the stat sheet in a 1-0 road win over Occidental Saturday afternoon at Jack Kemp Stadium.

The Cougars had the lion's share of the offensive chances, out-shooting the Tigers by a 6-1 margin in the first half, including all three shots that were on target.  Lauren Grissom came the closest in the first half, with an out-swinging right-footed effort from the edge of the six-yard box that the keeper turned aside.

The breakthrough on the scoreboard finally came just before the hour mark.  Isabella Santa Maria deflected a clearance attempt from the edge of the Occidental box.  The rebound bounced just in front of the Tigers' keeper and bounced away.  The ensuing scramble resulted in the ball landing at the feet of Grissom, and the graduate student managed to boot it into the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Ten minutes later, the Cougars nearly doubled their advantage when Anela Sandobal got off an open look from near the top of the box.  Unfortunately, the try clanged off the left post.  But the defense was able to hold the Tigers to only two shots on target the entire game, and neither truly tested keeper Paloma Platas, who earned her fifth shutout in eight starts this season.

Grissom had three of the Cougars' seven shots on goal in the contest.  The Cougars earned four corner kicks without conceding any.  Nineteen field players saw double-digit minutes of action for the Cougars, who remained undefeated on the season and a perfect 4-0 against their new SCIAC conference rivals on the year.  The Cougars remain perfect all-time against Occidental, as the only other meeting between the two sides was also a 1-0 Azusa Pacific win, back in 1989.

The Cougars are now 6-0-2 on the season, and will look to run their win streak to five games when they host Pomona-Pitzer Wednesday evening.  Kickoff at the Cougar Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
