SURPRISE, Ariz. — No. 1 Azusa Pacific men's tennis delivered a championship performance Saturday, sweeping No. 2 Biola 4–0 to capture the PacWest Conference title for the fourth time in five years at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center.
The victory marks the Cougars' fourth conference championship in the last five years—and their final PacWest title as the program prepares to transition to Division III next season.
While the final score reads 4–0, the match turned on one pivotal moment in doubles.
With the teams splitting courts No. 2 and No. 3, all eyes shifted to court one where Soeren Grandke and Mathys Pinoit battled Biola's top duo in a high-stakes showdown. Locked at 6–6, the match went to a tiebreaker where Biola surged ahead 6–1, just one point away from claiming the doubles point.
But the Cougars responded with resilience and poise, rattling off seven consecutive points to win the tiebreak 8–6 and steal the doubles point in dramatic fashion.
That momentum carried directly into singles.
Azusa Pacific wasted no time taking control, winning three matches in straight sets to clinch the championship. Mathys Pinoit dominated at No. 2 with a 6–0, 6–2 victory, followed by David James Brownlee at No. 3 with a 6–4, 6–1 win.
At the top of the lineup, Soeren Grandke sealed the title with a commanding 6–3, 6–1 victory at No. 1, securing the fourth and final point for the Cougars.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 20–4 overall and heads into the NCAA Tournament with momentum, confidence, and another championship trophy in hand.
