CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cougars picked up another pair of nonconference wins on day two of the Claremont Convergence Tournament on Saturday, holding off UC Merced by an 11-8 final in the morning session before making a little program history with a 20-0 shutout of Occidental.
Game 1: Azusa Pacific 11, UC Merced 8
The opening game of the day started with a long feeling-out process. Bailey Hollick put the Cougars on the board two minutes in, and the Cougars kept a lid on the goal defensively, keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard deep into the second quarter, eventually settling for a 5-1 lead at halftime. Hollick struck for two more goals during the third quarter, stretching the lead to 8-3 in the process. Hollick was a workhorse all day, drawing seven exclusion fouls against UC Merced.
Montana George finished off her own hat trick with a power play goal with a little under five minutes to play to regain that five-goal edge at 10-5, and her fourth of the game just over a minute later would prove to be a valuable insurance policy. Kayla Tweed started in net and made eight saves during her two-plus quarters of work.
Game 2: Azusa Pacific 20, Occidental 0
Jessie Nelson scored on the Cougars' first two possessions and the team never looked back, posting the third shutout in program history against the host Tigers. Nelson would lead the offense with five goals in the game, while George, Hollick, and Sophia Vetuli would each have a hat trick. Nine different Cougars scored a goal in the contest.Azusa Pacific found the back of the net at least four times in every quarter, while three goalies split time in net during the shutout, with Tweed being credited with eight saves and a steal in the winning effort. Azusa Pacific has played nine games against their future conference opponents in the SCIAC this season, winning all nine.
Up Next: Now a season-best nine games above the .500 mark, Azusa Pacific (16-7) resumes conference play next Saturday when they host Fresno State at Citrus College. The match is scheduled to start at 12:00 noon.
