AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific fell to No. 12 Fresno State, 19–7, on Saturday afternoon in GCC action at Citrus Aquatic Center.
The Cougars opened the scoring early in the first quarter when Kori Cunningham found the back of the cage to give Azusa Pacific a brief lead. Fresno State quickly responded with a scoring run, putting together six goals in the opening period. Daniela Herrero Miralles added a late goal just before the buzzer to cut the deficit to 6–2 after one.
Fresno State continued to build its lead in the second, but Azusa Pacific stayed within striking distance with three goals in the period. Montana George converted off an assist from Jaeden Johnson, and Audrey Dexter followed with a goal set up by George. Herrero Miralles added her second goal of the contest in the final seconds of the half as the Cougars trailed 10–5 at the break.
In the third quarter, Jessie Nelson capitalized on a G-E opportunity off an assist from Kohia Rego to account for Azusa Pacific's lone goal of the period.
Fresno State extended its advantage in the fourth quarter with a six-goal frame. Montana George scored her second of the day on a G-E opportunity with just over a minute remaining to close out the scoring for the Cougars.
George led Azusa Pacific with two goals and an assist, while Herrero Miralles added two goals from the cage. Cunningham, Dexter and Nelson each contributed a goal as the Cougars totaled 24 shots.
Defensively, Herrero Miralles recorded nine saves while adding two steals in a full-game effort.
