AZUSA, Calif. — No. 39 Azusa Pacific added a signature win to its red-hot stretch Thursday afternoon, defeating No. 5-ranked Division III Tufts 4–3 at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
In a highly anticipated interdivisional matchup, the Cougars (14–4) overcame an early deficit and leaned on their depth and resilience in singles play to secure their 10th consecutive victory and remain unbeaten at home.
Tufts (6–2) struck first, sweeping the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 1–0 lead into singles.
Azusa Pacific responded immediately.
No. 19 Soeren Grandke set the tone at the top of the lineup, delivering a dominant 6–2, 6–4 victory at No. 1 singles to even the match. Shortly after, Mathys Pinoit battled through a three-set thriller at No. 2, grinding out a comeback win to give APU its first lead of the afternoon.
The Cougars continued to stack points in the middle of the lineup. David James Brownlee delivered one of the most pivotal performances of the day at No. 4, rallying for a 6–4, 5–7, 6–3 victory in a tightly contested match.
Jacob Rudd-Hicks provided another win at No. 5, securing a composed 6–4, 7–5 win to seal the 4–3 victory for Azusa Pacific.
Tufts picked up its points at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, but the Cougars controlled four courts overall, showcasing their strength across the lineup.
The victory marks a statement result for it, as the Cougars' Division II depth proved decisive against one of the nation's top Division III programs.
With momentum continuing to build, APU extends its winning streak to 10 matches and improves to a perfect 10–0 at home, further establishing itself as one of the hottest teams in the country.
