Cougars Blank Chaminade Before Nightcap Slip

Cougars split with Chaminade highlighted by Tipton's 2 solo home runs.

AZUSA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific split Tuesday's doubleheader with Chaminade at the Cougar Softball Complex, taking the opener 6-0 before falling 6-3 in the nightcap. The Cougars rode a complete-game shutout from Ava Hernandez and home runs from Julia Doan and Hannah Tipton in game one, before Chaminade used a five-run middle stretch in the finale to secure the split despite extra-base hits from Tipton, Bella Fraser and Jocelyn Guzman.

Game One: Azusa Pacific 6, Chaminade 0

Hernandez was sharp from the start, retiring the opening three batters with a pair of strikeouts and keeping the Silverswords off the scoreboard all game long. She scattered just three hits across seven innings, struck out six and did not allow a walk in the complete-game shutout.

The Cougars broke through in the bottom of the first. Rianna De La Barcena and Tipton both singled, and after Maddy Debs reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error, Tipton came home on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

Azusa Pacific added three more runs in the second. Celeste Camarena singled and later stole home after Reagan Kunkle reached on an error and swiped second. Two batters later, Doan launched a two-run homer to center with two outs, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Tipton added to the advantage in the fifth, driving a solo home run to left for her third hit of the day and a 5-0 Cougar lead.

The Cougars capped the scoring in the sixth when Camarena doubled, moved to third on a groundout and came home on Guzman's sacrifice fly to left.

Tipton paced the offense by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Doan finished 2-for-4 with a two-run homer. Camarena also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and a stolen base.

De La Barcena, Alexus Corona and Guzman each added a hit as Azusa Pacific totaled 10 hits in the win.

Chaminade threatened most in the fourth and sixth innings, but Hernandez stranded a runner at second in the fourth and induced an inning-ending double play in the sixth to preserve the shutout.

Game Two: Azusa Pacific 3, Chaminade 6

The Silverswords took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Cougars answered in the fourth, when Tipton blasted her second solo home run of the day to left center to even the score.

Chaminade regained control with a two-run third and added three more in the fifth to build a 6-1 advantage. Azusa Pacific responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring twice after Fraser doubled and later came home on an error before Guzman ripped an RBI double to make it 6-3.

That was as close as the Cougars would get, as Chaminade closed out the final two innings to secure the split.

Tipton paced Azusa Pacific at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Fraser and Guzman each doubled, with Guzman driving in a run.

In the circle, Debs got the start, striking out three over 2.2 innings, while Allie Reese tossed the final 4.1 innings in relief.

Up Next: The Cougars return to the Cougar Softball Complex tomorrow, March 18 for their final doubleheader against the Silverswords. First pitch of Game One is at 4:00 p.m.
