REDLANDS, Calif. – Azusa Pacific earned a pair of wins Friday afternoon and evening at the Thompson Aquatic Center, holding off a Cal State Monterey Bay rally for an 11-8 victory earlier in the day, then rolling past Redlands in the nightcap, 20-4.
Game One: Azusa Pacific 11, Cal State Monterey Bay 8
Azusa Pacific opened the day with a strong start against Cal State Monterey Bay, jumping out in front behind a quick pair of goals from Hollick to take a 2-1 edge after one. The Cougars' defense took over in the second, holding the Otters scoreless while Azusa Pacific added four goals, including tallies from Jessie Nelson, Bailey Hollick, Audrey Dexter, and Montana George, to take a 6-1 lead into halftime.
Cal State Monterey Bay answered in the third, erupting for three goals to trim the margin to 7-4, but the Cougars stayed composed and found an important response to keep control heading into the fourth. The Otters continued to push early in the final frame, but Azusa Pacific delivered timely answers, getting goals from Kohia Rego and Dexter, plus another from George, to steady the game and finish off the 11-8 victory.
Hollick and George paced the Cougars with three goals apiece, while Dexter added two goals and an assist. Jaeden Johnson chipped in a goal and two assists, and Rego also found the back of the net. Daniela Herrero Miralles anchored the win in goal with 10 saves while playing all 32 minutes.
Game Two: Azusa Pacific 20, Redlands 4
The Cougars set the tone early with a seven-goal opening quarter and never looked back, using a balanced attack and strong goalkeeping to pull away from the Bulldogs. Nelson got Azusa Pacific on the board 17 seconds into the game, and the Cougars kept coming. Nelson added two more in the first while Dexter, Hollick, and George all chipped in to build a 7-0 run before Redlands broke through at the buzzer, making it 7-1 after one.
Azusa Pacific tightened up defensively in the second and continued to stretch the margin offensively, outscoring Redlands 5-0 in the period. Dexter struck twice in the quarter and Evelyne Prado converted as the Cougars took a commanding 12-1 lead into halftime.
Out of the break, Azusa Pacific stayed in control with a six-goal third quarter. Hollick opened the half, Dexter and Evelyn Prado found the net again, and Nelson continued her big day as the Cougars pushed the advantage to 18-3 heading into the fourth. Redlands managed a late extra-man goal in the final seconds, but Azusa Pacific's early cushion was decisive as it closed out the 20-4 win.
Nelson led the way with six goals, while Dexter posted a seven-point outing with four goals and three assists. George added three goals, Hollick scored twice with two assists, and Prado finished with two goals and an assist. In the cage, Madelyn Nim recorded five saves in 16 minutes and Kayla Tweed added two saves over the final 16.
Up Next: With the pair of wins, the Cougars improved to 8-4 on the season and will travel to Arizona State next weekend to compete in the Sun Devil Classic. They open up a 4-game tournament on Saturday, Feb. 14 against La Verne for the teams' third clash of the season. Game time is scheduled for 12:40 p.m. MST (11:40 a.m. PST).
