Cornerstone Comeback

Cougars drop doubles point but win four singles matches to capture another chapter of the Cornerstone Cup rivalry.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — No. 17 Azusa Pacific women's tennis battled back from an early deficit to defeat Biola 4–3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center, earning another hard-fought Cornerstone Cup victory.

Biola (4–3) seized early momentum by claiming the doubles point. The Eagles pulled off a ranked upset at No. 1 doubles, as Dafne Andres and Ivet Stancheva defeated the No. 15-ranked duo of Stina Larsson and Karola Suviste, 6–4. After APU evened things up at No. 2 behind Shannele Lopez and Vini Bautista, Biola clinched the point at No. 3 with a tiebreak win.
Order of finish (doubles): 1, 2, 3

Trailing 1–0, the Cougars (7–2) responded emphatically in singles.

At the top of the lineup, No. 45 Stina Larsson rebounded after dropping the opening set to defeat Kailee Mazzeo 3–6, 6–2, 6–2. Vini Bautista delivered another key three-set win at No. 2 to give APU its fourth and decisive point, outlasting Ivet Stancheva 6–4, 3–6, 6–4.

Azusa Pacific also dominated in the middle courts. Karola Suviste earned a straight-sets victory at No. 3 (6–3, 6–1), and Shannele Lopez secured a tight two-set win at No. 4.

Biola picked up singles wins at Nos. 5 and 6, but the Cougars' strength across the top four courts proved decisive.
