AZUSA, Calif. — APU men's soccer gave Coach Dave Blomquist a night to remember, holding off Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 3–2 win and making him the winningest head coach in program history.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2–0 lead, but CMS kept pushing and made APU work for every minute. With the match hanging in the balance, the Cougars stayed composed and battled together through the final whistle.
"Today's game was really competitive and ebbed and flowed between the two teams," Blomquist said. "Getting out to a 2–0 lead was nice, but Claremont had no quit. They probably had the better of us in the second half, but we still showed a lot of togetherness all the way to the final whistle."
The record is the latest milestone in Blomquist's long tenure at APU, which has included conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances. But this one came with the team around him: a hard-fought win, a 2–0 lead tested by a determined opponent, and a group that stayed together to the final whistle.
APU returns to Cougar Soccer Complex on Monday, Oct. 19, to host La Sierra at 5 p.m.
