Three If by Sea

Cougars drop straight-set decision to the #7 Sea Lions.

AZUSA, Calif. The Cougars put up a decent fight against the 7th-ranked team in the nation, but ultimately were swept at home by Point Loma (25-22, 25-14, 25-20) Saturday afternoon inside the Felix Event Center.

The Cougar offense started hot, with five kills and an ace in the first 12 points of the match to build an 8-4 advantage at the start.  That would be the highlight of the match, however, as the Sea Lions quickly wiped out that early lead with an 8-2 run of their own.  The Cougars would climb within a single point at 20-19, but a Point Loma offense that hit a blistering ..463 in the opening set would prove too much, closing out the set with a 25-22 win.

The second set was all Point Loma, with the Sea Lions at one point rattling off 10 consecutive points to take an overwhelming lead.  The Cougars regrouped in the third, keeping things close for the first half of the set before another 7-0 run by the Sea Lions gave them an insurmountable margin.  The Cougars did their best to cut the gap to four, fending off a pair of match points in the process before the Sea Lions finally completed the sweep.

By the Numbers:

.376 – Point Loma's hitting percentage in the match, to the Cougars' .183.
10 – kills by Sarah Wilson, who led Azusa Pacific in the match.
14 – digs by Mia Medrano, the team leader in that category.
3 – number of Azusa Pacific players (Wilson, Jackie Winfield, and Flora Sebestyen) who have now surpassed 100 kills on the season.
6 – number of consecutive wins by Point Loma in the all-time series between the two schools.
100 – number of all-time head-to-head meetings between the two teams (Azusa Pacific holds a narrow 51-49 lead)

Up Next:  Now 5-4 overall, the Cougars will continue their homestand on Wednesday against Hawai'i-Hilo.  Game time against the Vulcans is set for 6:00 p.m.
