AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific made a statement Thursday evening, knocking off 12th-ranked Colorado Mesa by a 2-0 final at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The Cougars struck late in each half to earn the victory.
The Cougars were on the front foot for a large segment of the first half, outshooting the Mavericks 9-4 in the first half. None of the early shots were particularly dangerous, but late in the first half the breakthrough finally came. Alexis Fuller sent a ball through to Zoey Kuhn on the right edge of the box. Kuhn sent a shot high towards the middle of the goal and the keeper deflected it, but the rebound went straight to Anela Sandobal. The junior immediately headed it into the left side of the net to put the Cougars ahead with five minutes left in the half.
Three minutes into the second half, keeper Alexia Muniz made the best save of the game, sticking her right foot out to deny a free shot in the box. The defense continued to hold fast, withstanding attack after attack as the game grew increasingly physical in nature, with 15 fouls being called in the second half. Finally with just over two minutes remaining, a quick counterattack provided a valuable insurance goal. Victoria Castro intercepted a pass near midfield, and sent a beautiful crossing pass ahead for Faith Crouse. The senior ran onto the ball near the right corner of the box, dribbled once, and fired a shot into the upper middle of the net for her first of the season, putting the finishing touches on the upset win.
