Five-Set Frenzy

Kostoff dishes career-high 56 assists; Wilson joins 400/400 club in milestone night.

AZUSA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific opened PacWest Conference play in dramatic fashion Wednesday night, outlasting Menlo in five sets (23–25, 25–17, 30–32, 25–17, 15–13) inside the Felix Event Center. The Cougars (5–3, 1–0 PacWest) showcased resilience, balance, and historic performances to fight off the Oaks and begin conference play on a high note.

The first set went down to the wire, with Menlo edging the Cougars 25–23 despite strong swings from Sarah Wilson and Flora Sebestyen. In set two, APU found its rhythm behind Brooklyn Kostoff's steady setting, pulling away late for a 25–17 win to even the match.

The third set was a marathon, with both teams trading points deep into extra rallies. Wilson, Sebestyen, and Jackie Winfield combined for 16 kills in the frame, but Menlo narrowly prevailed 32–30 to regain control. Facing a 2–1 deficit, the Cougars regrouped in the fourth, tightening up their block and passing while Sebestyen delivered four kills on nine attacks to fuel another 25–17 response.

That set the stage for a nail-biting fifth. Menlo struck first, leading 8–7at the changeover, but it refused to fold. Kostoff continued to spread the ball effectively, while Wilson and Winfield delivered clutch swings in transition. With the match tied at 13–13, Sebestyen put down a huge kill and a costly attack error by the Oaks sealed the 15–13 set and a 3–2 victory for the home side.
