SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Cougars fought to the bitter end in both halves of their road finale at Point Loma, but ultimately dropped both games to the Sea Lions, falling 5-4 in game one and 2-1 in the nightcap.
Game One: Point Loma 5, Azusa Pacific 4
After a quiet first third of the game, the Cougars struck first in the top of the fourth. Â
Dominic Martinez laced a single into center field with one out, setting the table for
Elijah Cook. Â The center fielder pulled a 2-1 offering over the wall in left for his 14th home run of the season, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. Â That advantage would be doubled in the sixth when
Antonio Lujan came up with one out and the bases loaded. Â Lujan came through with a single to center to drive in two more, putting the Cougars ahead 4-0.
While this was going on, staff ace
David Hays had tossed five scoreless innings, and
Gabe Jacobs followed with two more of his own. Â But the Sea Lions woke up in the eighth, plating one to get on the board. Â Then in the bottom of the ninth, the bottom fell out. Â The first three batters reached base, including a run scoring on a throwing error. Â After a strikeout, a single down the left field line made it 4-3 with the winning run on first, and a double to right completed the Point Loma comeback. Â Martinez and Cook each had two hits for the Cougars, who totalled nine in the game.
Game Two: Â Point Loma 2, Azusa Pacific 1
Game two stayed scoreless until the bottom of the third. Â A leadoff hit by pitch made it to third with one out, and the Sea Lions played small ball, bringing him in with a squeeze bunt to strike first. The Cougars immediately answered in the top of the fourth, stringing together four singles in the inning, capped off by
Will Medina knocking a 1-1 offering into left field to plate
Jacob Hayes. Â But any hope of taking the lead was wiped out by a double play groundout to end the threat.
The Sea Lions were able to put three hits together in their half of the fourth to retake the lead, and that would prove to be enough, despite a complete-game effort from Cougar starter
Gavino Rosales, who limited Point Loma to just five hits on the day. Â The Cougars put up nine hits for the second straight game, led by
Mikey Easter with three hits and
Elijah Morgan with two, but left seven runners on base.
Up Next:Â Azusa Pacific (20-26, 18-22 PacWest) will return home for their final four games of the season, starting with the remaining pair of contests against Point Loma. Â That doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday. Â However, due to rain in the forecast, it will be played on Monday afternoon at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
