SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Azusa Pacific men's tennis' pursuit of a fourth-consecutive PacWest title came up just one match short as Concordia took out the tournament's top seed 4-3 on Saturday afternoon to win the PacWest championship match at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
It is the first men's tennis title for the Golden Eagles, who have put together their best season in program history, and played their best match of the year when it mattered most. It was the Cougars' 10th trip in program history to the conference final.
Azusa Pacific is now 22-4 on the season, while Concordia improves to 19-3. Both teams will next host their respective NCAA West Regional matches against Hawai`i Pacific and Point Loma. The matchups will be announced by the NCAA in May.
For the third time this season, Concordia won the doubles point against Azusa Pacific, and this time, the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Five of the six singles matches were in straight sets and Azusa Pacific won three of them to make the overall score tied 3-3. Then Adam Large clinched the victory for the Golden Eagles by winning at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.
The Cougars' three singles wins came from
Elias Emilio Walter,
Joan Crespo and then
Soeren Grandke. Walter's win made him the second winningest singles player in tournament history as he tied Martin Soukal and Benjamin Loccisano for the second most singles wins at 8.
Joan Crespo won his match next, wrapping up an impressive tournament for himself in impressive style with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Grandke's battle at No. 2 singles took a little longer but the PacWest wins leader never trailed as he earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory in a rematch with Felix Vehyle.
