Turned the Tide

APU Moves to 6-1 in PacWest Play.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Azusa Pacific kicked off their 11-game trip to the islands with a 2-1 series victory In Honolulu over the weekend.

Game 1: In the opening game, the Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in their time to the plate courtesy of two doubles by Bella Fraser and Izzy Rivera. However, the Silverswords were able to plate two runs of their own to make it a one-run game headed into the third.

APU got insurance for the lead headed into the fourth after a passed ball and heads up baserunning allowed Rianna De La Barcena to score.

The tide quickly turned in the bottom of the sixth for the visiting Cougars as the Silverswords put together a four-run frame off of three hits.

It threatened to steal the game back away from Chaminade but they would leave the tying and go ahead run on base as the Silverswords took game one.

Game 2: In the ensuing game later that afternoon, the Cougars once again jumped to an early lead their first time up to bat as Sommer Quinones scored on a fielder's choice. Chaminade responded with four runs over the next two innings, building a comfortable 4-1 lead.

It's deficit was short lived as the Azusa Pacific roared back in the top of the fifth with Fraser, Penuelas, De La Barcen, and Quinones plated five runs for them to go up 6-4.

While the Silverswords pulled within one-run off an RBI single, another courtesy of a wild pitch, and Maddy Debs to innings of shutout work preserved the 7-5 win for the Cougars.

Game 3: In Saturday's rubber match, the Cougars once again got on the board first via Caitlin DeCanio and Sierra Sandoval RBI singles.

Before the Chaminade had a chance to offer a rebuttal, they plated four more unanswered runs off singles for off base hits from Alexus Corona, Simone Penuelas, and Sommer Quinones.

While the Chaminade was able to score one run in the bottom of the seventh, a near combined shutout by Maddy Debs, Mia Castillo, and Ava Hernandez was more than enough to move APU to 6-1 in PacWest play.

Game Notes
-   DeCanio reached 100 career RBI's at APU.
-  Debs lowered her season ERA to 2.67 in 27.0 innings of work.
-  DeCanio and Sandoval both have 10-game hitting streaks.
-  Quinones has reached base safely in the last 10 games.
-  Head Coach Carrie Webber now has 499 career wins at APU.
