Fight to the Finish

Cougars claim points in two more events, secure best-ever finish at NCAAs.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Competing for the final time in her collegiate career, Montana White made sure the Cougars would end up with their best-ever finish at the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships.  White qualified for the final in the 100 freestyle, then helped secure more points for the team by swimming the anchor leg in the 4x100 relay.

White got the day off to a great start, putting up a 49.70 in the morning prelims to secure one of the eight spots in the final, and with it her fifth All-American honor of the week.  She then kicked off the evening program by earning sixth place in the 100 free final, touching the wall in a time of 49.74, earning another 13 points for the team.

Around an hour later, White was back to the blocks to finish her illustrious career, this time competing with her teammates as she followed Sydnee Wilson, Mikaela Maemura, and Elizabeth Sivesind as the anchor leg in the 4x100 freestyle relay.  Wilson's 48.98 closing leg was the third-fastest split among the 80 swimmers who hit the water in this event, allowing the Cougars to move up down the stretch to a 13th-place finish, securing six more points.

These results meant that Azusa Pacific finished with its best-ever finish at nationals, both in total points with 90 and in place in the overall standings at 15th, besting the 19th-place squad from two years ago.  It's just one more superlative to place upon this squad, which won the program's first conference championship last month.

It also serves as the capstone on White's career, which has already seen three PCSC conference swimmer of the year awards and may well see a fourth in just a few weeks.  While those are impressive shoes to fill, the likes of Wilson, Maemura, and several others appear ready to step up to continue the momentum as the program looks ahead to next season.
