Provisionals Punched

Four athletes kicked off their 2025 outdoor seasons with provisional marks at the Riverside City Invitational.

RIVERSIDE, Calif — Although most of the team started their outdoor track seasons earlier this month at the Pomona-Pitzer David Salo & Nancy Crenna Collegiate Invite and the CMS Rossi Relays, a select group of indoor athletes began their outdoor seasons at the Riverside City Invitational. Azusa Pacific had 13 athletes compete, with four of them already securing provisional marks.

In her first outdoor competition of the season, Trinity Miller shook things up on the track, running a personal-best time of 24.00 (0.7) in the 200m to take second overall at the meet. Although early into the outdoor season, she became just one of four athletes to run a provisional mark this season. However, Miller's indoor season might not be over just yet as she currently sits 17th in the national rankings with her previous season-best time of 24.16, which she ran at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic 2025.

After competing in four indoor meets earlier in the season, eight-time All-American Alayna Verner returned outdoors where she took first place overall in the 400m. Her time of 54.69 makes her the first person across the country to hit the provisional mark (55.70). She also currently sits within the top-10 on the national list for the 400m after running a time of 54.11 in New Mexico.

Hannah Richardson also shined over in Riverside, winning both the discus throw and the hammer throw events. After throwing a personal-best 47.14m (154' 8") in the hammer throw, Richardson went on to earn a provisional mark in the discus throw. Her throw of 46.07m (151' 2") not only hit the provisional mark but also became 11th all-time on the school record book with the farthest throw since Elle Alexander in 2021.

On the men's side, Maxime Wassme continues to improve each month, this time running a time of 47.6 in the 400m, just 0.06 seconds within the provisional mark. However, before getting to fully prepare for outdoor season, Wassmer will get the chance to compete among the best in the nation as he currently sits fifth overall on the qualifying list with a time of 46.85.

Up Next: The rest of the outdoor squad will continue its season by competing at the Beach Opener, hosted by Long Beach State on Mar. 7th-8th. The following week, several Cougars will have the chance to compete at the NCAA DII Indoor Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. The top qualifiers will be announced soon so stay tuned for more information.
