AZUSA, Calif.: On the heels of their best start to PacWest play since 2017, the Azusa Pacific softball team was named the PacWest Team of the Week this afternoon.
The Cougars, who entered last Friday three games under .500 to start the year, quickly flipped the script as they swept Menlo by the scores of 5-4, 6-0, 8-0, and 3-0 to leave the Cougar Softball Complex with a 7-6 overall record and a spot atop of the PacWest standings.Â
As evident by the scorelines, Head Coach Carrie Webber's pitching staff put on a masterclass against the Oaks as Mia Castillo, Ava Hernandez, and Maddy Debs combined for 19 consecutive innings of shutout work throughout games 2-4.
Their lineup provided plenty of insurance throughout the weekend, with Izzy Rivera and Hannah Tipton both connecting on their first homers of the season and Emily Zuniga leading a squad that batted .333 with a combined 33 hits.
