Rust Busted

Azusa Pacific put together 24 personal-best marks at the 29th Annual Rossi Relays this Saturday.

Claremont, Calif. — The sun is out and the 2025 outdoor track and field season is officially underway as the Cougars chase their eighth consecutive PacWest Championship.

While some athletes recover from the long indoor season and others continue to prepare for the NCAA Indoor Championships, the rest of the team competed in its second rust-buster outdoor meet of the season. Traveling just 11 miles east to Claremont, the Cougars competed at the 29th Annual Rossi Relays. Azusa Pacific has competed in the Rossi Relays almost every year, dating back to 2003 when the program was still a part of the NAIA.

The highlight of the day may have been the 800m Sprint Medley, in which Azusa Pacific ran 1:29.11, breaking the previous meet record of 1:31.60. Shamar Anderson started off the relay, leading with Dejuan Walcott, Dominic Gonzalez-Shelmire to the impressive finish.

In other relay performances, the Men's 4x800, featuring Erik Leal, Avery Erikson, Maddox Oliver, and Jonas Teeter, clocked in a time of 7:52.80 to finish third overall. Their finish ranks within the top 15 in program history and the fastest time run in the relay since 2013.

Meanwhile, a few throwers captured first-place finishes at the meet, including Molly Olson in the Shot Put and Luisa Fischer in the Javelin Throw. Molly Olson's best throw of 14.19m (46' 6¾") exceeds her previous personal best mark of 13.42m (44' ½) thrown at the Nevada Invitational & Multis in January.

Overall, the Cougars had a strong showing at the meet, piecing together 24 personal-best performances. Although Azusa Pacific has not showcased their whole team yet, the men competing today put together a third place finish with 92 points, while the women took fourth with 71 points.
