Although the indoor season kicked off back in December, Azusa Pacific opened its outdoor season at the David Salo & Nancy Crenna Collegiate Invite hosted by Pomona-Pitzer College. At the same time, several Cougars competed up north also improved upon their provisional marks, including another school record set by
Olivia Alexandre.
SEATTLE, Wash. — Day 2 of the Husky Classic was highlighted by the distance squad which put together three personal bests and a new school record in the 800m.
Breaking her own school record,
Olivia Alexandre ran 2:04.77 to finish fourth overall in an 800m field of mostly Division I runners. She now move into second in the nation, improving from third overall with her previous record of 2:06.24 ran at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
In the mile,
Eric Perez led the way with a time of 4:07.53, running the third-fastest time in program history. His provisional mark improved by nine seconds from his previous time of 4:16.30 set last weekend in New Mexico.
After setting a new school record in the 3k on Day 1 of the Husky Classic,
Felix Perrier ran a person-best time of 4:09.11 in the mile. His time, although just short of a national provisional mark, is also the fourth-fastest time in program history, improving on his previous time of 4:10.53 in which he ran last season.
Jessica Kampman Walzcak also ran a career-best time of 4:57.90 in the mile, just two seconds short of a the provisional mark.
Then, capping off a successful trip to the PNW, Azusa Pacific's 4x400m relay team of
Esther Conde-Turpin, Alexandre,
Trinity Miller, and
Alayna Verner improved on their previous mark, finishing 3:43.48. The time improves to 12th on the provisional list and is the 6th fastest time ran in school history.
POMONA, Calif. — Back home in SoCal, seven Cougars outright won their events, respectively, while several athletes competed in their first track meet of the 2025 season.
Here are some of the highlights of the day:
In the 100m Hurdles,
Luisa Fischer ran 15.30 to outright win the event, finishing just .15 second off her personal best time.
Jordan Davenport also won the 400m with a time of 59.93, less than a second off her personal best time set in her first collegiate meet nearly a year ago.
In pole vault, freshman
Alexus Salazar earned first overall with a jump of 3.50m while
Sofia Vasquez led a group of three Cougars in the 3k, finishing with a new personal-best time of 10:38.32.
Running in his first ever 800m race,
Dominic Gonzalez-Shelmire finished third overall, running a time of 1:56.16. Gonzalez-Shelmire, an All-American in the 400m, currently holds the fourth-fastest time in school history in the 400m.
In the 400m hurdles,
Nasir Samuels finished first overall with a time of 55.61, less than a second off his personal-best time.
The throwers had a strong showing, led by
Stefano Matteucci who finished first overall in the discus throw, second overall in shot put, and seventh in the hammer throw to kick off the season with a promising start.
Up Next: The team's trip to Washington marked the end of the indoor season until the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships from March 13-15, where national qualifiers will head to Indianapolis, Indi. The rest of the team will compete at the CMS Rossi Relays next weekend in Claremont, Calif.
