SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
Brody Bohren helped Azusa Pacific clinch the doubles point and then earned his first singles win of the season to lead the Cougars to their fourth-consecutive win to start the season and the 20
th-consecutive win over PacWest opponents, beating Westmont 6-1 on Monday afternoon at the Abbott Tennis Courts.
The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, where Bohren and
David James Brownlee triumphed 7-4 to earn the first point of the match. The Cougars then went on to win the first five singles matches to finish and take a 6-0 lead before the Warriors scored their lone point at No. 6 singles.
The Cougars are now 4-0 on the season and have a 23-match winning streak in regular-season contests. Westmont drops to 0-3 with all of those losses coming against PacWest opponents.
Elias Emilio Walter had to take on a red-hot Austin Stone, who has been impressive at No. 1 singles for the Warriors at the early stages in the season. He won his doubles set against Walter and then took the first set in singles 6-4. However, Walter drastically changed the match in his favor by taking the second set at love before winning the match tiebreaker, 10-5.
Brownlee was the first Cougar to win in singles, remaining undefeated so far in his collegiate career through four matches. He won 6-0, 6-1 to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Then
Miha Velicki won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2 to make it a 3-0 lead. The Cougars' senior is now 4-0 in his career against Westmont in singles.
The clinching point came from the racket of reigning PacWest Freshman of the Year
Soeren Grandke. He triumphed at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-2 against Diego De Cooman. The Cougars added to their lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win by Bohren followed by Walter's 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 victory.
The Cougars also won the No. 3 doubles set 6-4 as Grandke partnered with
Albertus du Plessis for the senior's second career doubles set.
The Cougars now have 27-match winning streak and will next play against Hope International on Friday against whom they have a 28-match winning streak. Azusa Pacific's return to the Cougars Tennis Complex will begin at 2:30 p.m.
