The Inland Empire Strikes Back

The Coyotes Clamp Down Late, Hand Cougars a 62–56 Home Loss.

AZUSA, Calif - They may have changed the venue and the stakes. Still, the intense rivalry between Azusa Pacific and Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) proved as electrifying as ever Saturday night. In their first showdown since the 2024 NCAA West Regional Final, it was the visiting Coyotes who successfully navigated a defensive slugfest, defeating the Cougars, 62-56, at the Felix Event Center.

The contest, marked by 20 lead changes and stifling defense from both sides, remained locked in a tight battle throughout. Azusa Pacific (1-3) briefly looked poised for victory late in the second half, taking a 54-51 lead with just over six minutes remaining. However, the game changed hands decisively on the strength of CSUSB's backcourt and timely defense.

CSUSB's leading scorer, Xavier Clinton, who finished with 14 points, drained a clutch three-pointer to tie the game, setting the stage for a dramatic close. After a Gavin Davis layup put the Coyotes ahead for good, CSUSB's defense locked down the home team. In the final three minutes of the contest, Azusa Pacific failed to score, going cold from the floor as the Coyotes managed to ice the game with free throws, finishing 9-of-16 from the line overall.
