Cougars Shutout 7th Straight Opponent

Cougars defeat Fresno Pacific in 1-0 win, extend shut-out streak to 7

AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific edged out Fresno Pacific 1-0 on Saturday evening at the Cougars Soccer Complex. Mayilen Salazar collected her first goal of the season in the Cougars second straight win.

The numbers tell the story better than the scoreline. Azusa Pacific dominated from start to finish, outshooting Fresno Pacific 19–4, including 8 shots on goal compared to the Sunbirds' lone attempt on frame. Despite controlling 59% of possession in a scoreless first half, the Cougars couldn't find the back of the net early.

That changed in the 57th minute, when Mayilen Salazar got on the end of a loose ball in the box and slipped it past the Sunbirds' keeper for the game's lone goal. The freshman has now recorded points in back-to-back matches, adding to her assist from Thursday's 1–0 win over Dominican.

Goalkeeper Alexia Muniz anchored the backline for yet another shut out. Sophia Emerson, Jada Preston, Madison Woodward, Anjolie Mayeda, and Alexis Fuller were lights out on defense, holding Fresno Pacific to just four total shots. The Cougars have extended their shutout streak to 7 straight, tied for the longest streak in APU history since 2016, and are 2 games away from tying the all-time record, set in 2001 and again in 2013. Azusa Pacific is the only team in Division II to have 7 straight shutouts.
