AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific opened PacWest play on Thursday night, shutting out Dominican 1-0 at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The victory extended the Cougars' shutout streak to six straight matches, the longest active streak in all of NCAA Division II. The only team the Cougars have conceded a goal to is the defending national champions, Cal Poly Pomona.
The Cougars were in control throughout the first half, generating multiple looks on goal but unable to find the finishing touch. APU held Dominican to only one off-target shot through the first half, and the Penguins looked unthreatening. Faith Crouse was dangerous on the right wing, continuously beating her outside back to create chances in the box, but nothing landed. The Cougars entered halftime tied 0-0.
In the 61 minute, Camila Hernandez delivered the breakthrough. Off an attempted Dominican clearance poked away by fellow freshman Mayilen Salazar, Hernandez found the ball at the top of the box for a one-time shot that floated over the keeper's head and dropped into the right corner of the net. The goal not only gave Azusa Pacific their first lead in 180 minutes of play, but also marked the first of Hernandez's collegiate career.
From there, the Cougar defense once again proved unshakable. The back line absorbed every push from Dominican, while goalkeeper Alexia Muniz only needed to make one save. Center backs Sophia Emerson and Jada Preston were exceptional in the backline, making key tackles and ensuring that Muniz was rarely tested.
