SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Azusa Pacific served Point Loma its first conference loss of the season, defeating the Sea Lions 2-1 on the road to remain first in PacWest standings.
Zoey Kuhn scored 2 goals in the opening 7 minutes of the match to lift the Cougars to an early 2-0 lead- a deficit that the Sea Lions could not come back from. The win marks APU's first over PLNU since 2019, and is only the second loss the Sea Lions have conceded in conference play in the last 2 seasons.Â
Kuhn put the Cougars up quickly in the 3rd minute, when a bad pass from the Sea Lions's goalkeeper left their center back vulnerable. Kuhn pounced on the miscue, beating the PLNU defender to the ball and taking a touch around her. She dribbled into the box and had a perfect look on goal- a curling right-footed shot that bent just inside the far post to put the Cougars up 1-0.
Just 4 minutes later, Kuhn gave the benches and spectators deja vu. Another mental slip from the PLNU back line left the same center back vulnerable, and Kuhn intercepted yet another bad pass. Just like before, she took a touch around her defender and carried the ball into the box before bending it around the keeper into the upper-90 of the far post. This goal would turn out to be the game-winner, as the Sea Lions cut the deficit in half only 4 minutes later, but the remaining 78 minutes of game time remained scoreless. Kuhn's goal marked her 4th of the season and 6th of her career.Â
With the win, the Cougars still sit at the top of the PacWest standings with 21 points- 3 points ahead of No. 2 Concordia. If the Cougars win their final two matches, they will clinch the PacWest regular season title outright, independent of any other results.Â
