AZUSA, Calif – APU hosted Menlo College on Thursday night, and a first half goal from the Oaks was all it took to separate the two sides as APU lost 1-0.Â
Azusa Pacific opened the game strong, racking up 4 corner kicks and 2 shots in the opening 20 minutes. However it was Menlo who found the lone goal of the evening, scoring in the 23rd minute. APU took another 2 shots in the first half but was unable to produce anything out of it.
In the second half, the Cougars again had the lionshare of the offensive opportunities, outshooting Menlo 10-0 in the half alone. The best opportunity to level the game came from an 80th minute corner kick. Freshman Camila Hernandez found defender Sophia Emerson directly from the corner, whose ensuing header was tipped over the crossbar by the Oaks goalkeeper. APU gained a numbers advantage in the 85th minute, when a member of the Menlo team saw a second yellow for time wasting. The 5 remaining minutes would not be enough for an Azusa Pacific comeback, and the game finished 1-0 in favor of the Oaks.Â
Inside the Numbers:Â
- APU's 10 corner kicks on the night produced a season high for the Cougars (prev. 9 at Hawaii Pacific)
- Azusa Pacific held Menlo to just 2 shots, their lowest amount faced of the season
- Faith Crouse and Zoey Kuhn each had a game high 3 shots, with Kuhn finding the target twice, and Crouse once
Up Next: The Cougars (10-3-3 and 7-2 in PacWest) look ahead to Senior Night, when they will host Jessup at the Cougar Soccer Complex for their final regular season home game. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., and a win or a tie will guarantee APU as PacWest Regular Season champions.
