Cornerstone Cup Claimed

Cougars claim Cornerstone Cup victory, defeating Biola 2-1

AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific claimed its last-ever Cornerstone Cup victory against cross-town rival Biola on Saturday evening. Anela Sandobal opened up the scoreline while Zoey Kuhn put away what would end up being the winning goal in the Cougars 2-1 defeat over the Eagles. APU has not lost to Biola since 2011, winning 25 of the teams' 36 total match ups, and collected the final bragging rights at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

The Cougars had complete control of the first half, putting up 7 shots to Biola's 2 and out-possessing the Eagles 59% to 41%. Alexis Fuller got the first good look of the night when she beat a slew of defenders and made her way inside the box for a shot on goal that was saved by the keeper. Faith Crouse also had a few looks on goal, while Victoria Castro was inches from putting the Cougars on the board when her shot tipped off the crossbar. Despite APU's clear chances, the scoreline was even after the first 45 minutes.

Azusa Pacific got on the board first in the 59th minute when Mayilen Salazar played a ball into the box at the feet of Sandobal. Sandobal settled the ball inside the 6 yard box with her back to the goal, turned her defender and fired a left-footed shot past the keeper to the far post. It's the second goal of the Sandobal's season and career.

Kuhn provided the insurance goal in the 76th minute. Abbie Campos distributed the ball from the midfield to the right wing where Kuhn took a touch to her left foot, beating her defender and ripping a left footed shot into the upper-90 of the far post. The goal would end up being the game-winner, as the Eagles earned a penalty kick off of a handball and came within 1 goal, but could not find the equalizer.
