AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific saw its 11-game unbeaten streak come to an end Wednesday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Vanguard in Costa Mesa in its first PacWest loss of the season and first defeat since September 4.
Vanguard struck early, scoring less than three minutes into the match to grab a quick lead. Despite the early setback, the Cougars settled in and began to create chances of its own. The Cougars fired six shots in the opening half, including looks from Madison Woodward, Mayilen Salazar, and Camila Hernandez, but each was denied by the Lions' goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Cougars continued to push forward, generating another nine shots. However, a second Vanguard goal midway through the half put APU in a two-goal hole they couldn't climb out of. The Cougars outshot Vanguard 15–6 and held a 2–1 edge in corners but couldn't find the finishing touch in the attacking third.
Up NextL With the loss, Azusa Pacific moves to 8–2–3 overall and 5–1 in PacWest play. The Cougars will look to bounce back when they return home Saturday to face crosstown rival Biola in the last Cornerstone Cup match between the two teams. Kickoff at the Cougar Soccer Complex is at 5:00 p.m.
