Cougars Fall to No. 19 Fresno Pacific

The nationally ranked Sunbirds remain undefeated as Azusa Pacific battles but falls in straight sets at the Felix Event Center.

AZUSA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific faced their second nationally-ranked opponent of the week, falling in straight sets (16–25, 10–25, 16–25) to No. 19 Fresno Pacific inside the Felix Event Center. The Cougars (6–10, 2–4 PacWest) showed flashes of rhythm early in each set but couldn't match the efficiency and size of the unbeaten Sunbirds (16–0, 4–0 PacWest).

They came out competitive in the opening frame, keeping pace through the first several rotations. Sarah Wilson provided early points with four kills, while Trinitee Carroll distributed the ball effectively. However, Fresno Pacific closed the set on a 19–12 run behind its .368 team hitting percentage to take it 25–16.

Set two belonged to the Sunbirds, who opened with an 8–0 run and never looked back, hitting an impressive .500 in the frame. APU's bright spot came from Flora Sebestyen, who delivered four kills to stop FPU scoring runs, while Mia Medrano anchored the back row with consistent serve-receive and digs. The Sunbirds' serving pressure limited APU's rhythm in transition, and FPU took the second 25–10.

In the third, the Cougars showed renewed energy after a slow start behind Jackie Winfield's kills and multiple service aces from Brynja Martin, pulling within 9. But the Sunbirds' balanced offense closed the door, outpacing APU 25–16 to secure the sweep. Despite the loss, Azusa Pacific displayed strong effort defensively, posting 48 digs against one of the nation's top teams.
