Set Piece Frenzy

Cougars defeat HPU, scoring 3 goals- all off set pieces

WAIPI'O, HI— Azusa Pacific was clinical on restarts on Saturday night, scoring all 3 goals from set pieces to beat Hawai'i Pacific 3–2 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The win pushes APU's streak to four straight and keeps the Cougars undefeated in PacWest play (3–0)- their best conference start since 2019, when they finished 18–1.

APU struck first in the 26th minute when Leke Ademola headed home Sohei Matsumori's free kick rebound after the initial shot ricocheted off the crossbar. The goal marks Ademola's 5th of the season, tying him for 5th in the PacWest in goals and 6th in points, while the assist marked Matsumori's first point of the year. The Sharks equalized early in the second half, but the Cougars answered from another restart.

In the 54th minute, center back Diego Martinez powered in a header from a set-piece cross by Luis Solis, marking Martinez's first goal as a Cougar. A former reserve finding himself into the staring XI by injury, Martinez has now started three straight and made a clear impact in the back line. Solis's assist brings him to 11 points, second on the team behind Ademola and 8th in the PacWest.

Six minutes later, Orlando Valencia-Jimenez sent home a screamer: a half-volley through traffic that he collected off a free kick that deflected off the wall. The shot froze the keeper for what became the game-winner, and Valencia-Jimenez's first as a Cougar. HPU came within 1 in the final 9 minutes but APU settled for nothing less than a win.
