Bring Out the Brooms

APU wins in straight sets to take key PacWest road win at the Shark Tank

HONOLULU, Hawai'i — Azusa Pacific closed its Hawai'i trip dominantly, sweeping Hawai'i Pacific (25–20, 25–17, 29–27) Thursday night inside the Shark Tank. The Cougars (6–8, 2–2 PacWest) set the tone early in a wire-to-wire performance to get them back in the win column.

The Cougars took advantage of the Sharks' early mistakes as the home squad made five service errors. While APU's offense was being held to a .000 hitting percentage, HPU's ineffectiveness, along with costly mistakes at the net, proved to be the deciding factor in the opening action.

Set two saw their offense finally kick into gear, as Flora Sebestyen proved nearly unstoppable on the outside with five kills in the frame. APU used a 7–2 mid-set run fueled by elite serving from Makayla Chiechi and defense from Jackie Winfield to take control and close it out 25–17.

In the third, Hawai'i Pacific rallied to keep things close late as they forced a deadlock at 25 a piece, but the tandem of Sarah Wilson and Katelyn Sonnier proved to be too much. The duo combined for 10 kills in the frame, with Winfield adding key points down the stretch to help them finish off the sweep with a 29–27 victory.
