ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Cougars followed a familiar formula to victory, as a dominant second-half effort propelled them to a 77-56 road win over Jessup on Saturday afternoon. Amaya Kirkman had a game-high 25 points, while the Frontline duo of
Kelly Heimburger and
Sydney Hani combined for 36.
How It Happened: For all the praise that will be heaped on the frontcourt for their efforts, it was Kirkman who carried the offense in the first quarter. The senior guard scored 11 points in the opening 10 minutes, allowing the Cougars to stay close despite the rest of the team shooting a combined 3-12 from the field.
Trailing by just two points after that opening quarter, the bench came to life in the second. Hani had seven points in the period, while
Elyse Mitchell knocked down a pair of threes, including one just before the halftime buzzer that gave the Cougars a 38-34 lead at intermission. It was a lead they would not relinquish.
In the third quarter, it was time for Heimburger to start putting her stamp on the game, as the reigning PacWest Player of the Week would score eight points after being limited to just two in the first half. Azusa Pacific slowly built the lead, growing from 40-38 at one point early in the quarter to 54-45 by the end of the third.
The fourth quarter saw the Cougars slowly put the game out of reach; using the offensive talents of the four players who had already stepped up as Heimburger, Hani, Kirkman, and Mitchell combined for 21 of the team's 23 points in the quarter while the defense kept the Warriors scoreless over the final four minutes to secure another victory.
By the Numbers: Kirkman ended the day with 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. Heimburger scored 17 of her 19 points after halftime. Hani had a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds. As a team, the Cougars snagged 19 offensive rebounds, which they turned into 19 seconds chance points, and also turned 21 Warrior turnovers into another 28 points. Azusa Pacific completed a season sweep of Jessup with the victory and remain undefeated against the Warriors in four all-time meetings.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (17-2, 11-1 PacWest) head south for their next two contests, starting with their first showdown of the year against fellow PacWest contender Point Loma. Tipoff against the Sea Lions on Wednesday is set for 5:30 p.m.
