FRESNO, Calif. - Jaci Maze's two second-half goals led #22 Azusa Pacific to a comeback victory over Fresno Pacific after entering halftime down 1-0. "What a homecoming for
Jaci Maze" shared head coach
Brooke Lincoln on Maze's performance in her hometown. "With the stands full of 30 to 40 of her friends and family, she put on a show tonight."Â
"This team is just showing one another what they are capable of" continued Lincoln. "It's unfortunate the only [Fresno Pacific] shot the whole night found the back of the net, but I love the adversity it brought. Another day, and I'm incredibly proud of this team- there seems to be a theme there."
How it Happened: Azusa Pacific controlled the first half, out-possessing the Sunbirds, but Fresno Pacific struck first in the 30th minute, unphased by the Cougars' early momentum. Azusa Pacific peppered the Sunbird's goalkeeper Monique Nevarez with eight shots in the first half, but Nevarez allowed nothing past her as Fresno Pacific entered halftime with a one-goal lead on the Cougars.Â
Azusa Pacific wasted no time to equalize in the second half. In the 47th minute,
Jaci Maze pressed the Sunbird's center back and keeper, forcing them into a turnover. Maze collected the ball on the other side of Fresno Pacific's backline and had an easy tap-in, just within the six-yard box to tie the score 1-1.Â
The Cougars continued to press the Sunbirds, with
Avery Guiel taking two shots in three minutes- one of them ricocheting off the post. But
Jaci Maze proved it was her night to shine. In the 52nd minute, Guiel sent a bouncing ball into the box that fell to the feet of Maze. Maze settled the ball down and sent it past the Sunbird's keeper to give Azusa Pacific the lead.
By the Numbers: The nationally ranked Cougars are now 5-0-1 on the season, their longest unbeaten streak since 2010. Azusa Pacific outshot the Sunbirds 15-1, with nine being on target, and controlled most of the game with 59% of possession. Seven different Cougars had a shot, and seven saw minutes coming off the bench.Â
Up Next: Azusa Pacific travels to Santa Barbara to face Westmont Thursday, October 3rd. Kickoff is at 3:15 p.m.
