Two Goals Not Enough to Hold Off Sunbirds

Azusa Pacific came up short in its PacWest opener, falling 3-2 to Fresno Pacific.

FRESNO, Calif. - The Cougars dropped their PacWest opener 3-2 to Fresno Pacific on Saturday.

How it Happened: Three second-half goals lifted the Sunbirds to a win over Azusa Pacific. An early goal by Gabriel Oropeza in the 3rd minute was the lone goal in the first half, as the Cougars entered halftime up 1-0.

In the second half, the Sunbirds had three responses within ten minutes. A series of goals in the 48th, 53rd, and 58th minutes allowed Fresno Pacific to establish a 3-1 lead.

Azusa Pacific didn't let up as Brian Torres cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 69th minute to rewrite the scoreline to 3-2. The Cougars took three more shots throughout the remainder of the second half, but it wasn't enough to even the match.

Up Next: The Cougars continue PacWest play in Santa Barbara on Thursday, Oct. 9th where they will face Westmont. Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m.
