AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific continued its winning ways on the volleyball court Saturday, collecting its third consecutive victory with a straight-set win over Jessup (25-16, 25-21, 25-18) on the floor of the Felix Event Center. Five different Cougars had at least five kills in the contest.
"We're just trying to get better every day," said head coach
Chris Keife. "I think that's the message for this team- trying to sustain better play for longer and trying to make every set matter."
How It Happened: The opening set saw a lengthy feeling-out process, as after the Cougars won the first point, the teams traded 14 consecutive side outs before the Cougars again won a point on their serve.
Anya Green's kill for the last of those side outs was the opening salvo of a decisive 16-5 run by the Cougars that gave them a double-digit lead at 23-12, eventually winning the set by a 25-16 margin. Azusa Pacific hit .318 as a team in the first set, their highest of the afternoon.
The latter two sets each saw Jessup assume a small lead before Azusa Pacific rallied each time. In the second, the Warriors used a 5-1 run to break open an early tie and take an 11-7 lead. But a few points later, the Cougars came roaring back, led by middle blocker
Amanda Albertini, who had four kills and a block assist in a span of just eight points as the Cougars strung together a 10-1 run of their own to take a 22-15 lead. While the Warriors were able to fend off four set points,
Delaney Tate ensured the comeback effort would go no further, giving Azusa Pacific a two-set lead.
In the final frame, the Warriors pounced early and lead 7-2 and still held a four point advantage at 13-9, but the Cougars dug in and found another 10-1 run.
Anya Green and
Kendyl MacAskill each had a kill and two block assists as part of the onslaught, while
Brynja Martin came off the bench and added a pair of kills. Azusa Pacific would win five of the final six points on the day, with Tate again providing the clincher to send the Event Center crowd home happy.
By the Numbers: While Tate and Green tied for the team lead with six kills apiece, the trio of Albertini,
Katelyn Sonnier, and
Sarah Wilson each had five. Tate also had a team-high 11 digs, while Albertini and Green each chipped in two solo blocks and three block assists, part of the 10 blocks the Cougars had as a team. The defense held Jessup to a .088 hitting percentage on the afternoon. This was Azusa Pacific's first-ever meeting against Jessup, one of three former NAIA programs that have joined the PacWest conference this season.
Up Next: Having beaten one set of Warriors, Azusa Pacific (6-3, 2-0 PacWest) will look to complete the set when they hit the road on Tuesday to face Westmont College. First serve in Santa Barbara is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
