AZUSA, Calif. - Zoey Kuhn's lone goal proved to be the difference in Azusa Pacific's first-ever win over Western Washington. The victory marks the first time in nine years that the Cougars have gone unbeaten through their first five games (4-0-1).
"It still feels overwhelming at the moment," said head coach
Brooke Lincoln after the game. "I think we're one of the best teams in the country. For the past couple of years, I've felt like we were one step away from being a top team in the country. We brought in some transfers with some bite and a dog mentality to get stuck in and do the hard gritty things and I could not be more proud of this team for the product they put on the field tonight."
How it Happened: Western Washington was an early threat, registering two shots on goal and earning two corners before the Cougars created any offensive opportunities. Despite the Vikings' eager start, the first 45 minutes was an even match-up, as both teams had three shots on goal and split the possession percentage 49/51, tilting slightly in favor of the Cougars.
Azusa Pacific's lone goal of the match came early in the second half, just 13 seconds after the referee's opening whistle. Sophomore
Avery Guiel beat her defender and sent in a shot from the left side of the penalty box, meeting the outstretched hand of the Vikings' goalkeeper. The ball was redirected into the feet of
Zoey Kuhn who slotted it in to mark her first goal of the season and Azusa Pacific's first goal against Western Washington in program history.Â
Western Washington had three shots in the second half but was unable to convert as the Cougars held onto their 1-0 lead for the remaining 44 minutes. Goalkeeper
Maddie Williams had a season-high six saves to ensure Azusa Pacific's clean sheet and unbeaten streak.Â
By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific outshot Western Washington 9:6, with both teams registering six shots on goal. The Cougars brought in eight players off the bench to contribute to the win. Possession remained near equal throughout both halves, slightly in favor of the Cougars (51%).
Up Next: The Cougars will open PacWest play next Saturday, September 28th as they travel up north to face Fresno Pacific. Kickoff is at 6:30 PM.
