ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - #23 Azusa Pacific's season came to an end on Monday morning, as the Cougars fell to #15 Nebraska-Kearney by a 4-1 score in the round of 16 of the 2024 NCAA DII Tennis Championships. The Cougars close out the season with a 21-3 overall record, and the program has now posted three-consecutive 20-win seasons.Â
The tide of the match turned in doubles, as Azusa Pacific looked to be in position to take the doubles point early.
Vini Bautista and
Julia Jordan won for the Cougars at No. 2 by a 6-1 score, and while Nebraska-Kearney won at No. 3, the Cougars were up 5-1 in the No. 1 matchup. The momentum changed drastically over the next few minutes, as Nebraska-Kearney's top doubles pair fought back and eventually won 7-6 (7-5) to steal the doubles point.
While
Madison Kane was quickly able to draw the Cougars even in the match with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jazmin Zamorano at No. 1 singles. Kane had a memorable senior season, and she etched her name in the program record books for both single season and career categories. From a single-season standpoint, she had the second-most wins at No. 1 between singles and doubles, finishing with 36, and her 19 singles wins at No. 1 is the third most in program history. From a career standpoint, Kane is now the program's all-time leader in doubles winning percentage, as she finished at .878 with 72 victories in 82 matches played. She is also second all-time in total wins (134), and third all-time for doubles wins at No. 1 (53) and overall winning percentage (.788 - 134 wins over 170 total matches). Kane is also ranked top-10 in several other categories.
Kane's victory at No. 1 was the lone singles win for Azusa Pacific on the day, as Nebraska-Kearney won on three-consecutive courts at No. 6, No. 4 and No. 3.Â
In addition to it being Kane's final match, Monday was also the final match for
Miruna Tudor. Tudor leaves the program ranked second all-time in program history for overall winning percentage, as she won 72 times between singles and doubles in 84 total matches for a .857 winning percentage.
While the loss of Kane and Tudor are significant for the program, the Cougars will return several key players next season in
Vini Bautista,
Julia Jordan,
Shannele Lopez and
Katherine Nguyen. This core group will look to make it four consecutive 20-win seasons and NCAA appearances, while also chasing down the program's third PacWest title.
