IRVINE, Calif. - After seeing its 10-game winning streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to open a Wednesday doubleheader at Concordia, the Cougars bounced right back in game two, as
Gavino Rosales threw a seven inning complete-game for his second consecutive outing to help lead the Cougars to a 10-0 victory. Azusa Pacific is now 16-16 overall, and 11-6 in PacWest play.
GAME ONE: Concordia 4, Azusa Pacific 1
Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but an RBI single from
Spencer Rasmussen in the top of the fourth knotted things back up at 1-1. After three scoreless innings for both teams, the Golden Eagles put up a three spot in the bottom of the eighth to grab control of the game. The Cougars had just five hits in game one, while Concordia finished with 10.
Isaac Mendez went 7.1 innings for the Cougars, allowing three earned runs while striking out five hitters.
GAME TWO: Azusa Pacific 10, Concordia 0
The Cougar bats came to life in game two, giving Rosales plenty of run support in his second-consecutive seven inning complete game outing on the mound. Rosales allowed just two hits on the day, and he faced just three hitters in five of the innings, while also forcing the Golden Eagles into four double plays. "Gavino has done a great job the last couple of outings," said head coach
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, "I think the biggest difference for him has been a renewed belief in his own abilities and more conviction with everything on the mound. He has given our team a big boost and he has done a good job of trusting the process. The guys have played great defense behind him and it has been fun to watch."
Azusa Pacific sent Rosales out to the mound with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, after
Cameron Lee had an RBI triple and
Mikey Easter drove in Lee with an RBI single. In the third, Rasmussen pushed the Cougars' lead to 3-0 with his second RBI single of the day, while
Omar Lopez made it 4-0 by drawing a bases-loaded walk. The Cougars also capitalized off of poor defense by Concordia, as a Golden Eagles error allowed two more runs to score in the third to make it 6-0.
Lee added more to the lead in the sixth, as he hit a two-run home run out to left field to make it 8-0, and
Cade Marshman drove in the ninth run of the game with an RBI double. The Cougars' final run of the contest was also brought home in the sixth, as
Diego Frey had an RBI single to score Marshman.
Marshman finished 3-for-3, while Lee and Rasmussen went 2-for-3 and Easter was 2-for-4. Azusa Pacific has scored 10 or more runs in six games so far this season.Â
Up Next: Azusa Pacific and Concordia will wrap up the four-game series in Irvine tomorrow, with a doubleheader set to start at 2:00 pm. With a sweep in tomorrow's doubleheader, it would be the Cougars' fourth-consecutive series win.
