THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Azusa Pacific opened up its weekend at the Tina Finali Tournament on Friday morning, defeating the University of Toronto by a 17-4 score. With the win, the Cougars are 6-6 overall.
Kaelene De Bie opened the scoring for the Cougars, burying a shot in the back of the net with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter for the 1-0 lead.
Rachel Ahumada and
Skylar Ford would also add goals in the opening period, sending the Cougars into the second with a 3-0 advantage.
Laia Marsinach Ortega would make it 4-0 with a goal at the 5:58 mark of the second. Toronto finally was able to get one past Cougar keeper
Alex Airitam, as it made it 4-1 with 5:40 to go before halftime. Over the final five minutes of the half, the Cougars out-scored Toronto by a 3-1 score, with
Catherine Ahumada finding the back of the cage twice, and Azusa Pacific took a 7-2 lead into intermission.
The Cougars opened the game up in the third period, pouring in eight goals while holding Toronto scoreless on the other end of the pool. Ortega and
Evelyne Prado each scored two goals in the third period. To start the fourth and final period, the Cougars were up by a 15-2 spread, and the fourth period saw each team score twice.Â
The Cougars nearly doubled Toronto in shots (34-17), with Azusa Pacific finishing with a .500 shooting percentage, while the Varsity Blues shot for a .235 percentage.Â
Aritiam earned the win in goal for the Cougars, as she played the first two periods and tallied five saves. At halftime,
Daniela Herrero Miralles took over in goal, and she finished with four saves. Ortega not only scored three goals in the game, but she also registered five assists to lead the Cougar attack. Ford had a goal and three assists, while
Ella Sweeney added three assists and three steals.
