Business Handled on Day One

Azusa Pacific secured its second win of the opening day of the Tina Finali Tournament, defeating host Cal Lutheran by a 14-6 score on Friday afternoon.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Azusa Pacific went 2-0 on Friday at the Tina Finali Tournament, as the Cougars followed up their morning win over Toronto with a 14-6 defeat of tournament host Cal Lutheran this afternoon. Azusa Pacific is back above .500 on the season, improving its record to 7-6.

Mica Schiavone scored a team-high three goals, while Alyssa Perez and Maritza Ochoa each added two goals. Ochoa also had three steals, and Catherine Ahumada and Maria Boix Pascual tallied two apiece. Daniela Herrero Miralles secured the win in goal, registering six saves over 16 minutes of action in the first and second period.

For the second-consecutive game, the Cougar defense held their opponents scoreless in the opening period of play, as the Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead heading into the second. Cal Lutheran scored its first goal with 6:48 on the clock in the second to make it 3-1. Over the remaining six and a half minutes of play in the period, the Cougars struck for three more goals, while the Regals added a pair. At halftime, Azusa Pacific was in possession of a 6-3 advantage.

In similar fashion to the morning victory over Toronto, the Cougars took control of the game in the third period, combining a four-goal performance offensively, while holding the Regals scoreless. Not only did the Cougars hold the Regals scoreless, but they did so despite Cal Lutheran having three power play opportunities early in the period.

Up 10-3 heading into the final period of play, the Cougars closed out the victory by out-scoring Cal Lutheran by a 4-3 margin. A Schiavone goal with 6:40 remaining in the game gave the Cougars their largest lead of the contest at 12-3.

Azusa Pacific finished with a .412 shooting percentage (14-for-34). The Cougars held the Regals scoreless in 10 power play opportunities for the hosts.

Up Next: The Cougars will close out the Tina Finali Tournament with two more games tomorrow. Both of the opponents are familiar ones, as the Cougars will play Ottawa (Ariz.) and #25 CSUN for the second time this season. The Ottawa game starts at 11:10 am, while the CSUN matchup will start at 1:50 pm.
