Water Polo Wraps Up Play at Tina Finali Tournament

Azusa Pacific split a pair of games in their final day of competition at the Tina Finali Tournament on Saturday.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Azusa Pacific split a pair of games on the final day of the Tina Finali Tournament on Saturday, beating Ottawa 13-5 before falling to #25 nationally ranked Cal State Northridge 16-8. 

Mica Schiavone led the offense for Azusa Pacific, scoring five goals on the day. Maritza Ochoa scorec three goals, while Skylar Ford and Maria Boix Pascual each collected three assists. 

GAME ONE: AZUSA PACIFIC 13, OTTAWA 5

Alexandra Akritidou got the scoring started for the Cougars, putting one in the net with 6:47 on the clock. Ottawa tied the game, but a 3-0 scoring run from Azusa Pacific ended the first quarter with a 4-1 lead. 

Ottawa was the first to dent the twine in the second quarter, but Azusa Pacific got goals from Evelyne Prado, Maritza Ochoa and Akritdou to extend the lead to 7-2. The Cougars then dominated the majority of the third quarter, going on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 11-2, before Ottawa found the back of the net to make the score 11-3. 

Laia Marsinach Ortega and Ochoa each collected a goal in the fourth quarter, while the Spirit also scored two goals, making the final score 13-5 in favor of Azusa Pacific. 

GAME TWO: CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 16, AZUSA PACIFIC 8

Montana White opened the scoring for Azusa Pacific, denting the twine at 7:17. The Cougars were able to get two more goals from Rachel Ahumada and Ochoa in the remainder of the first quarter, but the Matadors put five in the back of the net, leading the Cougars 5-3 heading into the second quarter. 

Schiavone added a goal for Azusa Pacific in the second quarter, but Cal State Northridge scored three of their own to take an 8-4 lead after the second. In the third, Alyssa Perez and Schiavone found the back of the net once again, but the Matadors continued to create separation, leading Azusa Pacific 12-6. 

Cal State Northridge went on a 4-0 scoring run to open the fourth quarter, but the Cougars were able to get two goals from Schiavone and White at 1:42 and :50. The final efforts were not enough as Azusa Pacific fell by a final score of 16-8 to the #25 nationally ranked Matadors. 

In both games, Azusa Pacific led in steals, earning 18 against Ottawa and 12 against Cal State Northridge and they were also 4-0 in sprints against the Matadors and 6-2 in sprints on the day. Azusa Pacific shot .350 on the day (21-for-60), while collecting 13 assists.

Up Next: Azusa Pacific will be back in action this Thursday against Pacific. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Citrus College Aquatics Center in Glendora, Calif.
