GLENDORA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific dropped its first Golden Coast Conference game on Thursday, losing by a 12-11 score to Cal Baptist. Azusa Pacific is 5-6 overall this season.
Mica Schiavone finished with four goals to lead the Cougars, while
Skylar Ford and
Alexandra Akritidou each added a pair of goals in the losing effort. Akritidou and
Laia Marsinach Ortega had two assists apiece. Defensively,
Rachel Ahumada and
Montana White recorded two steals.
How It Happened: The Cougars found themselves in an early hole at the end of the first period, as the Lancers held a 4-1 advantage, but the hosts battled back to start the second. Over the first three minutes of play in the second period, Azusa Pacific scored three unanswered goals to tie it up at 4-4, and a power play goal by
Alyssa Perez put the Cougars on top at 5-4 with just under four minutes left before halftime. About 40 seconds later, the Lancers tied it up at 5-5, and then Cal Baptist added two more before the break to regain a 7-5 lead.
Cal Baptist would out-score the Cougars by a 4-2 margin in the third, which put the Lancers up by an 11-7 spread entering the final eight minutes of play.
While Cal Baptist would score the first goal of the fourth period, which made it 12-7 with a little over seven minutes remaining, the Cougars made the game interesting, particularly down the stretch. With 3:49 to play,
Skylar Ford found the back of the cage for the Cougars to make it 12-9, and then with just over a minute to play, Ford added another goal to make it 12-10. Schiavone would score her fourth goal of the game with just 18 seconds left to make it 12-11, but the Lancers held the ball for the remainder of the clock to escape with the win.
By the Numbers: The Cougars took four more shots in the game, finishing with 34, compared to 31 for the Lancers. The Lancers went 2-for-9 on power plays, while the Cougars were 3-for-8.
Montana White won both of the sprints in the first half, while Maria Boix Pascual won both sprints for the Cougars in the third and fourth.
Up Next: The Cougars will kick off play at the Tina Finali tournament in Thousand Oaks tomorrow, with a 10:20 am game against the University of Toronto, followed by a matchup with tournament-host Cal Lutheran at 2:20 pm. On Saturday, the Cougars will take on Ottawa (11:10 am) and CSUN (1:50 pm).
