Cougars Clipped By Golden Eagles

Azusa Pacific fell 10-1 against Cal State Los Angeles during Tuesday night’s game.

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific struggled against Cal State Los Angeles resulting in a 10-1 loss on Tuesday evening. The Cougars now move to 2-7 this season.

How it Happened: The Golden Eagles got a hot start by scoring four runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Eager to close the gap, Azusa Pacific's Cameron Lee singled to center field before stealing second and third bases on wild pitches to put himself in scoring position. Cade Marshman brought him home with a sac fly to center field putting the Cougars on the board, 3-1 in the first inning.

The Cougars held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the next five innings yet also struggled to piece together hits on their side.

In the sixth inning with runners on the corners, the scoring action resumed as the Golden Eagles' Matthew Piotrowski hit a deep ball to left field resulting in a three-run homer. Two batters later, Cal State LA scored another home run to right field making the score 8-1 in the sixth inning.

In the ninth inning, Piotrowski batted in the Golden Eagles' final run with a sac fly to right field resulting in a 10-1 game.

The Cougars struggled against the Golden Eagles' Owen Hunt who threw ten strikeouts over seven innings. However, three of Azusa Pacific's five relievers turned in scoreless innings. Alfredo Frey, Zachariah McCorvey, and Joey Frey allowed only one hit while striking out four across their combined 5.2 innings of work.

Up Next: The Cougars will remain at home for the next week as they kick off their four-game series against San Francisco State this Thursday at the Cougar Baseball Complex. The first game will start at 5 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Friday with games at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. followed by the last game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
